Why do I see inventors with a phd or masters degree progressing in other fields other than their own?

Why do I see people that have a degree in a specific field such as computer science developing cars, radios and other stuff complete outside their field of endeavour. I know that some stuff intracorrelates with each other, but some inventions and ideas are just remarkable for those individuals.

Let us remember the origin of the Ph.D. It was created in the German university system in the 19th century from a realization that scientific knowledge was progressing very quickly. So quickly that just teaching students what was known was inadequate as that knowledge would be obsolete by the time it was learned. So instead, students would be taught an exact methodology of discovery, how to do research, how to find out new things. That is never obsolete. Thus, people trained that way are good at making discoveries.

That help?

what is expected out of an MBA graduate with specialization on, Marketing, HR, Finance, Operations Management?

Hi I am about to join a degree program (MBA), I have to select a specialization. Can anyone let me know what is expected out of an MBA graduate with specialization on, Marketing, Human Resource, Finance, Operations and IT Management.

Which MBA program claims to offer specializations? Be careful. There is no such MBA. Universities don’t grant MBA in information systems, or MBA in finance, or MBA in marketing. The MBA is a general degree preparing students for management positions in any level of a business, up to CEO. MBA students study accounting, finance, marketing, management, statistics, economics, strategy, policy, and other courses. Many MBA programs offer concentrations in these and many other fields, but that amounts to only 2-3 courses in your chosen field in the second year of study. Many students avoid a concentration and take a variety of elective subjects to gain a broader background. By the time you finish the first year you’ll be able to decide which concentration interests you.

The MBA is not like an MS degree that concentrates study in a single field and prepares students for high level staff or research positions. The MS typically requires an undergraduate education in the field in which you want the MS, or a closely related field. A finance major does not get an MS in chemistry, and a chemistry major does not get an MS in accounting. MBA programs accept students in any undergraduate field. They prefer students who do not have a business background because they give you the business training but they cannot provide the broad background that managers should have. I have taught MBA students with degrees in Music, Medicine, Dentistry, Law. Psychology, Political Science, Chemistry, Biology, engineering, and many other fields.

Most MBA programs prefer students with 2-3 years work experience after the first degree, but many accept students right out of college if they have good grades and a high GMAT score. Some MBA programs are designed specifically for new college graduates without work experience. MBAs with good grades are in high demand and they command good starting salaries. To find the MBA program that best fits your background, criteria and preferences, a good source of information is the Official MBA Guide, a free public service at http://officialmbaguide.org. You can use it to select programs in specific geographic regions, specific concentrations, or specific types of programs, such as full-time, part-time, executive, distance learning, and accelerated. You can specify criteria that are important to you and get a ranked list of programs that best fit those criteria. From the Guide you can go directly to a school’s URL or contact schools by email.

Criminal Justice jobs?

I have a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, a minor in Sociology, and half way through my Masters program. I work full time at Lowes and I am having trouble landing a job in my field. I am not willing to relocate to a different country and do not wish to become a police officer. Please help. I live in Phila. 10 points best answer.
no offense- changing my Bachelors degree is a no and changing the masters is a no. Not being able to do a field Im interested in is crazy. There must be something I can do that doesnt involve becoming a cop first.

If you are interested, you can find a position in being the director of a criminial justice facility, prison, or juvenille facility, however those types of positions do not become available very often.

Are graduate degrees worth while in Engineering?

I’m approaching my senior year in undergraduate chemical engineering and considering getting a masters or a doctorate. I have no desire to teach but was wondering if a graduate degree in the field would make all that much difference in salary or promotion. I co-op for goodyear (R) as of now.

If you intent to stay at the same job for most of your career, then the value is less than if you will change jobs often as it is always good to have a few extra items listed in the resume and it shows your commitment to the field with an advanced degree. The other thing that can be worth while is the alumni contacts for another school, this is assuming that you will get an advance degree at a different school than your undergrad.

Does it make sense to get a graduate degree in genetics and an MBA?

i want to work in a science field particularly genetics/pharmacy but i know the pay isnt particularly good and its hard to move up. Im currently rapping up my genetics degree at UC Davis is my plan of doing an MBA and a genetics graduate program good? I would love to work in management in bio/pharm company like genentech etc

That’s a high class question. :) Good for you that you have those kind of options. There is a lot of business in the medical field. Having an MBA would qualify you right away for management and give you an edge when it comes to looking for a job or future promotions. Good Luck to you!
