Psychology or Criminal Justice major?
Here’s a bit of background about my interests.
Okay I’m nearly finished my Associates degree in Criminal Justice, after which I plan to pursue my Bachelors in Psychology.
My initial goal is to attend law school. I inevitably want to end up either working as an attorney for a firm that specializes in criminal law, or perhaps throwing my hat into something extreme like working for the FBI. I’m pursuing a dual degree program where I obtain my law degree (the juris doctor) simultaneously with my Masters degree in Criminal Justice. It’ll save me about a year of schooling and a LOT of money doing it that way.
While pursuing my Juris Doctor I’d like to work with delinquent youth, maybe as a counselor or something.
Would I have a better chance of this with my Bachelors being in Psychology or Criminal Justice? I’ll have an Associates in Criminal Justice already so I thought switching it up to Psychology would hedge my bets.
Thoughts?
To be honest it won’t make much of a difference as far as getting a job working with delinquent youth or getting into law school. Both will work. Working with youth with a bachelors will be low pay and high stress so it is good you have a plan from there. The question you should ask yourself as far as which degree you want to pursue the next few years is whether you prefer the sociology classes better or the psych classes because that is only major difference. You can still take a lot of criminal justice if you major in psych. I did and I enjoyed the psych classes more so I went that route. Or you can do the opposite. Just look at the law schools you hope to get into and make sure you get all the prerequisites.
Masters degree (online)?
I am looking for good online programs for masters degrees in the following:
1) Masters in Administration (preferably with emphasis on Criminal Justice)
2) Masters in Criminal Justice
3) Masters in Library Science
I am looking for the best online program.
Also, I’ve got my bachelor’s in English-writing and Spanish, and career experience as a paralegal. Which one of the above would give me even more career options with better pay?
Links to websites would be great!!!
Nobody is going to want to employ somebody who is a master at sitting at a computer all and clicking a mouse, go get your masters degree on campus.
HELP need advise..Do Criminal Justice jobs have a decent salary?
Ive graduated recently with a BS in Criminal justice..My family keep telling me that jobs under the Criminal justice system don’t pay that well..and lately have been telling me to go for something like a 2 year program like Ultrasound..which makes a decent amount of money…
I would personally love to stay within the Criminal Justice system and pursue a Masters..but my family seems to think it will be a waste of money and time….
What do you guys think??
Should i give in and just enter an Ultrasound program which promises a great salary or should i take the plunge and go for my Masters in Criminal justice??
Please, serious answers only..i would really appreciate helpful advise.
Thanks in advance =)
My sister is in criminal justice area and she’s doing very well for herself. She got her BS in CJ at state university and worked volunteered at police station during the summer. After her BS, she did her master. 1 and half month after she got her masters, she got a job at homicide unit in california. She worked there for 9 years working on homoside cases. After 9 years, she applied for federal prosecution position (i don’t know what the agency is called) and she’s been working there for the last 7 years. She works on lot of high profile cases like serial killers, mass killing and multiple homicides. She was actually working on the BTK killer case and helped trakc him down and stuff. Whenever I see her, she’s always got some really interesting stories to tell. They’re pretty ugly but it’s always interesting to hear how criminal justice people end up tracking down killers and other criminals. I’d say that if CJ is what you want to do, go for it. There are unlimited amounts of opportunities in CJ. My bestfriend just got his masters last year in CJ and is doing pretty descent working as investigator (making $70,000 a year). Hope this helps. Good luck.
What can i do with a BA in Criminal Justice?
Actually i know theres not much i can do with a BA in Criminal justice and For now i cant go to Graduate school and get a masters .
So does anyone know of anything else i can do like get into a program ( not a university) that will lead me to an actual career with decent salary?? ..im actually looking for some type of training geared towards hands on approach ( and im not interested in becoming a police officer)
How about a parole officer? You might have to start as an assistant, but it’s a possibility. Also a youth corrections officer but it’s similar to police work. I would ask to speak to other alumni from your program and see what they are doing and how they got there.

are there more opportunities for a Master’s degree in counseling or criminal justice?
I have a BA in Psychology, am about to take my GRE’s, and am looking at a school with programs in both of the above areas. I am interested in them both equally, and want to be realistic at this point about my career opportunities in the future. Would there be more routes to go with a counseling degree? Anybody?
Wow, I just posted this, and the responses so far have been SO VERY helpful!!!!! Thank you!
Great question and not as uncommon a dilemma as we may believe -for those facing decisions about the pursuit of a Masters degree.
Truth be told, I have much more familiarity with Psychology, Counseling, and that particular genre than I do with Criminal Justice. My experiences in the latter discipline come from acquaintances within that field. As such, I show a bias toward Psychology … and, as such, toward a Masters program in Counseling.
At the same time, I believe it’s reasonable to assert that a Masters in Counseling may provide a broader range of opportunity than a Masters in Criminal Justice. That is, the Masters in Counseling will, at a minimum, provide you with the fundamental skills and knowledge (competencies) regarding all of human behavior -including criminal behavior. Depending on your area of specialization, you may focus your Masters in counseling on Criminal Behavior (however, it’s not something that I would do).
Let’s say you receive your Masters in counseling -as well as a certification as a Counselor and/or Therapist. You know have access to a wide range of possible clients (individual and institutionalized). That, inarguably, positions you much better for career opportunities -as well as career shifts.
If, on the other hand, you get a Masters in Criminal Justice, from the onset, you are pretty much narrowing your academic focus and, I’d argue, subsequently, your career opportunities to align with only those associated with Criminal Justice.
As such, my vote is for a Masters in Counseling … good luck!
P.S. A long time ago I received my B.S. in Psychology and it provided me a strong foundation for advanced academic work as well as multiple opportunities in both the educational and corporate sections.

Ph.D in Criminal Justice?
Can I get into Grad school?
I have a bach in Criminal Justice… completed in within two years. GPA is 2.89.
I have a Master’s Degree in Public Administration… GPA 3.25
I want to get into a Ph.D program… Criminal Justice or Criminology.
Will my age count against me… I am 21.
What do you all think?
Any suggestions on how to boost my chances?
Any suggestions on schools to apply for?
I knew a guy that went to the University of Southern Mississippi to get his PhD. Your age won’t count against you, but your low GPA definitely will. Have you taken the GRE?
